Xylitol is a plant based sweetener but it’s actually the opposite of sugar when it comes to dental health. Exposing your teeth to sugar, feeds the bacteria in the mouth causing cavities. Xylitol, on the other hand kills bacteria by up to 90%, helping to reduce plaque while making it harder for plaque to stick to teeth in future. It also neutralises acids in the mouth, keeping your enamel strong.
Xylitol is low in calorie and has a low glycemic index of 7, making it great for diabetics as it won’t spike insulin levels.
Our recommendations for adding Xylitol to dental care regime are:
£1.50 per pack or £18 for the taster pack. Available at Thurloe Street Dental in South Kensington, Waitrose, Holland and Barrett and other leading retailers

Biomin F Toothpaste ( with fluorapatite and precipitate):
Biomin slowly releases Calcium, Phosphate and Fluoride ions.
These combine to form Fluorapatite in and around exposed dentine tubules to reduce sensitivity and strengthen and protect tooth structure. It does not have xylitol in it, but used in conjunction with xylitol, it remineralises teeth.
£10 for a 75 ml tube. Available from Thurloe Street Dental or online.
